What should I have done?

I was at work in the open back room at the dentist's office, and the dentist said to the new staff member, "That's Jesse". Since I was in the room, I just waved at the new member. In hindsight, I should have walked out, shook his hand, and introduced myself to him. Is it okay if I didn't though?
