You are going to have to spend some time with close friends and let him go at least a bit. He came to you with a great deal of personal baggage and now he has to deal with it. Most likely he feels he can't do both at once. Of course he's stressed out and depressed. He may also not want you to go through all this when he actually has no idea how it will turn out.
